We study discrete (duality) symmetries of functional determinants. An exact transformation of the effective action under the inversion of background fields $\beta (x) \to \beta^{-1}(x)$ is found. We show that in many cases this inversion does not change functional determinants. Explicitly studied models include a matrix theory in two dimensions, the dilaton-Maxwell theory in four dimensions on manifolds without a boundary, and a two-dimensional dilaton theory on manifolds with boundaries. Our...

The process of neutrino-pair radiation due to formation and breaking of Cooper pairs of protons in superconducting cores of neutron stars is considered with taking into account of the electromagnetic coupling of protons to ambient electrons. It is shown that plasma polarization strongly modifies the effective vector weak current of protons. Collective response of ambient electrons to the proton quantum transition contributes coherently to the complete interaction with the neutrino field and...

The purpose of this paper is twofold: first we want to introduce a new type of hadronic interaction model (NEXUS), which has a much more solid theoretical basis as, for example, presently used models like QGSJET and VENUS, and ensures therefore a much more reliable extrapolation towards high energies. Secondly, we want to promote an extensive air shower (EAS) calculation scheme, based on cascade equations rather than explicit Monte Carlo simulations, which is very accurate in calculations of...

The solar and atmospheric neutrino anomalies constitute the only solid and most remarkable evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model, indicating that the lepton mixing matrix is fundamentally distinct from that describing the quarks. Here I will report on how supersymmetry with spontaneously or bilinearly broken R Parity provides a predictive theory for neutrino mass and mixing which leads to a solution of neutrino anomalies which can be clearly tested at high energy accelerators.

The process of $\nu \bar{\nu}$ radiation due to interaction of electrons with phonons in the crust of a cooling neutron star is studied with the consistent account of an electromagnetic coupling between electrons in the medium. The wavelength of radiated neutrinos and antineutrinos is typically much larger than the electron Debye screening distance in the medium, and therefore plasma polarization substantially modifies the effective weak current of the electron. Is shown, that under above...

The possibility to safely extract the neutron deep inelastic structure function $F_2^n(x)$ in the range $0 \le x \le 0.9$ from joint measurements of deep inelastic structure functions of $^{3}He$ and $^{3}H$ is demonstrated. While the nuclear structure effects are relevant, the model dependence in this extraction linked to the $N-N$ interaction is shown to be weak.

We investigate the conductance properties of a hybrid ferromagnet-semiconductor structure consisting of a confined two-dimensional electron gas and a transverse ferromagnetic strip on top. Within the framework of the Landauer-B\"uttiker model, we develop an alternative way to consider magnetic fields. Our method describes devices ranging from a recently realized nanomagnetometer down to quasi one-dimensional quantum wires. We provide a rigorous way to relate the measured resistance to the...

We show that radiatively generated Majorana mass for antiquarks is same as the Cooper-pair gap. We then calculate the electromagnetic corrections to mass of particles in the color-flavor locking phase of QCD at high density. The mass spectrum forms multiplets under $SU(2)_V\times U(1)_V$. The charged pions and kaons get the electromagnetic mass which is proportional to the Cooper-pair gap.

We report single crystal growth and magnetic susceptibility and neutron diffraction studies of the S=1/2 quasi-1D antiferromagnet CaCu2O3. The structure of this material is similar to that of the prototype two-leg spin-ladder compound SrCu2O3. However, the Cu-O-Cu bond angle in the ladder rungs in CaCu2O3 is equal to 123 deg, and therefore the magnetic interaction along the rungs is expected to be much weaker in this material. At high temperatures, the magnetic susceptibility of CaCu2O3 can be...

Meson spectra can be well approximated by a specific form of a nonlinear Regge trajectory which is consistent with a finite number of bound states. This may have important consequencies for experiment, and may be a hint for the theory.

We classify Lie-Poisson brackets that are formed from Lie algebra extensions. The problem is relevant because many physical systems owe their Hamiltonian structure to such brackets. A classification involves reducing all brackets to a set of normal forms, independent under coordinate transformations, and is achieved with the techniques of Lie algebra cohomology. For extensions of order less than five, we find that the number of normal forms is small and they involve no free parameters. A...

In this paper we show that a certain solvable Lie group constructed in a paper by Benson and Gordon has no lattices. This result answers (in the negative way) a question posed by several authors in the context of symplectic geometry. The main theorem is proved with the use of rational homotopy theory.

Polarized beam gamma p Compton scattering provides a theoretically clean way to extract the isovector parity violating pion-nucleon coupling constant $h_{\pi NN}^{(1)}$. This channel is more tractable experimentally than the recently proposed extraction of $h_{\pi NN}^{(1)}$ from the Bedaque-Savage process --- polarized target gamma p compton scattering. The leading parity violating effect is calculated using Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory. The size of the asymmetry is estimated to be...

We revisit the singular IIB supergravity solution describing M fractional 3-branes on the conifold [hep-th/0002159]. Its 5-form flux decreases, which we explain by showing that the relevant \NN=1 SUSY SU(N+M)xSU(N) gauge theory undergoes repeated Seiberg-duality transformations in which N -> N-M. Far in the IR the gauge theory confines; its chiral symmetry breaking removes the singularity of hep-th/0002159 by deforming the conifold. We propose a non-singular pure-supergravity background dual...

We reconsider the four dimensional extremal black hole constructed in type IIB string theory as the bound state of D1-branes, D5-branes, momentum, and Kaluza-Klein monopoles. Specifically, we examine the case of an arbitrary number of monopoles. Consequently, the weak coupling calculation of the microscopic entropy requires a study of the D1-D5 system on an ALE space. We find that the complete expression for the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is obtained by taking into account the massless open...

We report the issues of localization of various bulk fields on a brane in a curved background from a local field-theoretic viewpoint where a special attention is paid to a warp geometry in a general space-time dimension. We point out that spin 0 scalar field and spin 2 graviton are naturally localized on a brane with the exponentially decreasing warp factor, while spin 1/2 and 3/2 fermionic fields can be localized on the brane by introducing a bulk mass term with a 'kink' profile. {}For the...

We present axisymmetric maximum disk mass models for a sample of 74 spiral galaxies taken from the southern sky Fabry-Perot Tully-Fisher survey (Schommer et al. 1993). The sample contains galaxies spanning a large range of morphologies and having rotation widths from 180 km/sec to 680 km/secs. For each galaxy we have an I-band image and a 2-d H_alpha velocity field. The distribution of mass is modeled as a sum of disk and bulge components with distinct, constant mass-to-light ratios. We summarize the main results from our SCUBA survey of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at z~3. Analysis of our sample of LBGs reveals a mean flux of S850=0.6$\pm$0.2 mJy, while simple models of emission based on the UV properties predict a mean flux about twice as large. Known populations of LBGs are expected to contribute flux to the weak sub-mm source portion of the far-IR background, but are not likely to comprise the bright source (S850>5 mJy) end of the SCUBA-detected source count.
